NASPE Standard 1

Standard 1: Scientific and Theoretical Knowledge.

Physical education teacher candidates know and apply discipline-specific scientific and theoretical concepts critical to the development of physically educated individuals.

NASPE Standard 2

Standard 2: Skill and Fitness Based Competence

Physical education teacher candidates are physically educated individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to demonstrate competent movement performance and health enhancing fitness delineated in the NASPE K-12 Standards


During his Health Related Fitness class, PED 182, Nick was required to make a 7 week fitness plan that would improve his levels of cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength and muscular endurance. Before designing the fitness plan, Nick had to complete several different tests to measure his current level fitness, flexibility, strength and endurance. Nick was able to design a 7 week program that would increase his ability in those 4 fields as can be observed by clicking on the above fitness plan link.

NASPE Standard 3

Standard 3: Planning and Implementation
Physical education teacher candidates plan and implement developmentally appropriate learning experiences aligned with local state, and national standards to address the diverse needs of all students.


During the course of PED 255, Nick was required to plan and teach 3 lessons involving physical activity for a class. His last lesson was by far his most planned lesson in which a Lesson Plan and Activity progression sheet was required. His lesson was on Dance Dance Revolution and his lesson plan and activity progression sheet provide examples of activities that can be used to teach DDR. They contain various activities from simple to complex that students in grades 5 and up can try.

NASPE Standard 4

Standard 4: Instructional Delivery and Management
Physical education candidates use effective communication and pedagogical skills and strategies to enhance student engagement and learning.


Throughout the course of Nick's life, physical activity and sports have always played a major role. Nick constantly stays active to maintain a healthy fitness level. He has played on numerous athletic teams as well as trained on his own to enhance his level of fitness. This year while attending SUNY Cortland Nick has been a member of the Varsity Soccer Team as well as a member of the Rockland Gaelic Athletic Association's Junior Gaelic Football Team. Both sports require very high levels of cardiovascular endurance and Nick tries to get an edge on the competition by being more fit than his competitors. NASPE Standard 5

Standard 5: Impact on Student Learning

Physical Education teacher candidates utilize assessments and reflection to foster student learning and inform instructional decisions.

Standard 6: Professionalism
Physical education teacher candidates demonstrate dispositions essential to becoming effective professionals

Throughout the Spring '09 semester, Nick was asked to complete 10 hours of community service for his PED 255 class. Nick went above and beyond the 10 hours. He was awarded the Power of 10 award for doing at least 10 hours of community service in the Cortland community in memory of the Virginia Tech students who lost their lives in April 2007. Most of Nick's volunteer work was teaching various forms of physical activity to the Cortland Youth or his fellow students at SUNY Cortland. Nick started to realize that he enjoyed volunteering because he was interacting with others and also benefiting from the practice he was gaining in teaching others physical activity.

In addition to his volunteer work for his own enjoyment, Nick has taken his education with a professional attitude. He has been on the president's list, a member of the top 5% of his class and most recently received the Senior Academic Achievement Award from the Alumni Association presented to the top 5 seniors in the School of Professional Studies at SUNY Cortland.
